VIDEO: The Ultimate Survival Firearm

In this video, Jason Salyer discusses how the versatile shotgun can be used in a number of roles and why that makes it a great option for the one gun that can fulfill many roles.

Depending on the choke, ammunition, and accessories, the shotgun can be used for home defense, predator control, and a wide variety of hunting needs.

Jason covers what you need to know about what makes some shotguns more versatile than others, what ammunition you should stock up on, and why he thinks he would choose a shotgun if he could only have one gun.

  • I don’t disagree that a shotgun has value. However, for folks old enough to collect social security payments, recoil is important. Plus the utility of having a shotgun mounted on a standard AR-15 lower has even more versatility. My 410 bore Charles Daly AR 410 with 15 round magazine can do everything a more traditional one can. I gave my black aces tactical 12ga. Bullpup to my grandchildren. Don’t need it anymore. Plus all those years of AR based muscle memory are still useful. Well its a 410 not a 12ga. Ok, take your Remington 000 buck eight pellet loads and your pump shotgun and I’ll take my AR 410 loaded with Remington Ultimate defense four 000 buck pellets in a 15 round magazine and we’ll see what it does to a set of 35 yard targets. 15 x4, 410s is a better controlled spread then 8 x 7, 12ga. QED. And it is old guy friendly. Just a thought if you think shotguns are good. Plus I can take the upper off and swap a long range sniper solution or any of 15 other calibers. PS that upper cost $315 delivered to my door with no paperwork.

  • I recently found a 12 gauge shotgun upper receiver that fits on AR308 type lower receivers, and uses detachable mags. Not cheap though, it’s in the $1400 range, IIRC.
